For two decades, SEO has been measured in keywords and links. But the way search engines understand the web has quietly shifted underneath us. Google no longer just matches strings of text — it tries to understand things: people, companies, products, places and the relationships between them. These "things" are called entities, and whether Google recognizes yours has become one of the most important — and least measured — signals in modern search.

Most SEO tools can tell you where you rank for "best running shoes." Almost none can answer a more fundamental question: does Google actually know that your brand exists as a real-world entity? This article explains why that question matters, why it's so hard to answer, and how a schema-first, verification-based approach finally makes entity SEO measurable.

What is an entity, really?

An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing. Your company is an entity. So is your founder, each of your products, your physical locations and the services you offer. Google maintains a vast database of these entities — the Knowledge Graph — and connects them with typed relationships: this person founded that company; that company offers this service; this product is made by that brand.

When Google is confident about an entity, you see it surface as a Knowledge Panel, a rich result, or an answer in AI-generated overviews. When Google is not confident — when your brand is just an ambiguous string rather than a recognized thing — you lose those surfaces, and you compete on weaker footing for everything else.

The question that decides modern visibility isn't "do I rank?" It's "does the search engine understand what I am?"

Why entity SEO matters now

Three trends have pushed entities from a niche concern to a front-line priority:

  • AI-generated answers. Large language models and AI overviews assemble responses from entities and their attributes. If your brand isn't a well-defined entity, it's far less likely to be cited.
  • Disambiguation. Dozens of companies might share a name. Entity recognition is how Google tells your "Atlas" from the other ten. Without it, you risk being confused for — or buried beneath — a competitor.
  • Trust and E-E-A-T. Verified entities with consistent attributes across the web read as more authoritative. Recognition compounds: the more sources confirm you, the more confident Google becomes.

The measurement gap

Here's the problem. Traditional SEO platforms were built to measure rankings and backlinks. They have no native concept of "is this brand a recognized entity, and which of its services does Google actually know about?" So teams either ignore entity SEO entirely or rely on guesswork and AI tools that hallucinate entities the brand never actually published.

That hallucination risk is real and damaging. If you ask a generic model to "list this site's entities," it will happily invent plausible-sounding ones. Acting on invented entities wastes effort and can actively mislead your strategy.

The fix is grounding. Every entity you act on should come from your own structured data and be confirmed by an authoritative external source — never invented by a model.

A schema-first approach

The most reliable place to learn what entities a site claims is the site's own schema.org JSON-LD markup. This is the structured data you (or your CMS) publish to describe your organization, products, people and services in a machine-readable way.

A schema-first extraction process reads that markup directly and pulls out each entity's name and type — including nested entities and specific attributes like serviceType. Because it's reading what you actually published, there's no hallucination: every entity is grounded in your own markup. If an entity isn't in your schema, that's itself a finding — it tells you Google has nothing structured to work with.

What good extraction surfaces

  • An entity map: the organization at the center, connected to its products, services, people and locations.
  • Schema types deployed: how many distinct types you're publishing (Organization, Product, Service, Person, FAQPage, and so on).
  • Coverage gaps: pages and offerings that have no structured entity at all.

Verifying against authoritative sources

Extraction tells you what you claim. Verification tells you what the world confirms. The two authoritative, low-cost sources for this are the Google Knowledge Graph API and Wikidata.

For each extracted entity, a robust workflow checks both sources and assigns a status:

  • Verified — found and confirmed in Google KG and/or Wikidata with a confident match.
  • Pending — a plausible match exists but confidence is below threshold; worth strengthening.
  • Not found — no authoritative source recognizes this entity yet.

Trust filtering and confidence scoring matter here. A naive lookup will return loose matches that inflate your sense of coverage. A disciplined approach filters low-quality and rejected matches so your entity coverage % reflects reality, not optimism. And because entity data changes slowly, aggressive caching — for example, a 30-day shared cache on lookups — keeps the whole process cheap to run repeatedly.

Schema-first and externally verified means every entity on your map is grounded in your own markup and confirmed by an authority — no guessing, no hallucination.

Your entity SEO checklist

If you want Google to actually know who you are, work through this:

  1. Publish complete Organization schema — name, logo, sameAs links to your authoritative profiles, founders and contact points.
  2. Mark up every product and service with specific types and attributes, not just generic pages.
  3. Be consistent everywhere — your name, description and key attributes should match across your site, social profiles and listings.
  4. Pursue authoritative confirmation — a Wikidata item, credible press and consistent citations all raise Google's confidence.
  5. Measure coverage, not vibes — track entity coverage % and Knowledge Panel eligibility over time, and treat "Not found" entities as a prioritized backlog.
